A Journey of Love, Loss, and Purpose
My relationship with cancer began early in my life, in a way I never could have predicted. I was in my twenties when my sister Karla, just 26 years old, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought with every ounce of strength and grace she had for five long years. We watched her brave every treatment available, until eventually, there were no more options left.
Karla’s story broke all of our hearts. But for me, it did something more—it reshaped the course of my life. Her journey ignited in me a fierce desire to be of service, to make a difference. It led me to medicine, and eventually to the field where I found my true calling: psychiatry and psycho-oncology.
I thought I had lived through the deepest kind of loss once. But life, in its mysterious and painful symmetry, brought me back to that place years later—this time, with my beloved husband.
Through both personal tragedy and professional dedication, I’ve come to understand cancer not just as a medical diagnosis, but as a profound emotional, spiritual, psychological, and social rupture. It affects more than the body—it fragments lives, families, identities. It tests love. It challenges hope and beliefs. And far too often, it devastates those with the fewest resources to endure its impact.
Over the years, I’ve walked beside countless patients and their loved ones. I’ve seen the silent weight carried by caregivers, the emotional wounds that linger long after treatment ends, and the crushing financial strain that too often determines whether someone receives care—or goes without.
These experiences—intimate, raw, and deeply human—have become the foundation for my nonprofit work. This foundation was born out of loss, but it lives on through purpose. It exists to support those living with cancer, especially in underserved communities, where the burden is heaviest and the help is often scarce.
I invite you to walk this journey with me—to help bring relief, dignity, and hope to those who need it most. Every act of compassion, every resource shared, every hand extended makes a difference.
Together, we can honor the stories of those we’ve lost by standing beside those who are still fighting.
Thank you for being part of this mission.
With gratitude.
Xiomara
